My Battle with Acne & How PCA Skin changed my life...
Today, I just thought I’d take a moment to share my very own personal journey (and battle) with acne and acne associated scarring in hopes that it helps others in their skincare journey.
For as long as I can remember, I have always suffered with hyperpigmentation. It wasn’t until I entered my late teens that I started to see the toll that cystic acne had taken on my skin. Not equipped with the knowledge, or access to professional care that understood my skin, I took to many different solutions and wasted a lot of money on products and protocols that didn’t work for me. It wasn’t until years later that I would discover PCA Skin and all that it had to offer people suffering with various skin complaints, mine included!!
After reading up on the brand, I decided to give it a go and ended up building up my collection gradually as I fell in love with their products. Now years on, most people don’t believe me when I tell them what my starting point was; that I had acne and that I had such bad scarring and residual evidence of my outbreaks that I covered it religiously with makeup. My skin never used to see the light of day because of how conscious I was of it.
Having grown weary of being told I didn’t understand the woes of my fellow acne sufferers, I decided to do a little experiment with the hopes that my experience would show others that good skin is afforded to all those that care for it, and I did something I never thought I would.... I went without my precious PCA Skin for 3 months before the memories of my prior problem skin gradually came flooding back. Eventually my skin became so oily that I could set my clock by my outbreaks, they became cystic again, and I ended up with terrible scarring and hyperpigmentation (shown in the before photos above).
This experiment taught me two things... 1) To not take healthy skin for granted, there will be ups and downs - but once you know what you should be doing/using, you can always save the day; and 2) that consistency in your skincare routine is key to not only achieving results, but also to maintain them.
I restarted my regime of homecare PCA Skin products for oily/problem skin and incorporated in-clinic peels to accelerate the process of resurfacing my skin and decongesting my pores. The after pictures (above) are evidence of what I managed to achieve within 6-8 weeks of using PCA Skin homecare, and with only 2 in-clinic professional PCA Skin peels (spaced 4-weeks apart). The same results can be achieved with homecare exclusively, but seeing as this time around I also had access to my whole professional PCA Skin range, I thought - why not go for it!!
So much has changed for acne sufferers of today; skincare information/advice is so readily available that we now understand much more about our skin, today more than ever! The other side of that coin is the fact that the market is now saturated with products that mention key actives, albeit failing to mention the true strength, source of purity of their ingredients. This alone makes it so much harder to decide on what’s best for your skin, more often than not, resulting in the purchase of the wrong product entirely. Always take care to do your research before investing in any old brand, no matter how whizzy their marketing is.
